If you want, I can list for you several dozen examples of lack of attention to detail in Mavericks and examples of the kind of polish in Snow Leopard that's become increasingly rare with every OS X release since Lion.
There's already a long list of bugs found at /r/apple. It's always been this way and it's nothing major.Įxcept that Mavericks is still not as polished as Snow Leopard was and I expect Yosemite to continue that trend. Obviously there's some bugs in the system as it just came out but not more then before. I assume you haven't actually tried either of those options.Īpart from that I have to disagree with you on the lack of attention to detail. Even with this option enabled there is too little contrast.
If you want more contrast you can even check "Increase Contrast". Apple doesn't care much about the people who enable this option so they won't even try to make it look good. There's no reasonable middle ground with modest use of transparency like in all previous versions of OS X. It's a "black-and-white" option - either you get all the extravagant use of transparency or you get no transparency at all and dull grays instead. Then everything looks like shit because wherever there was transparency before there is now a dull gray. If you don't like the translucency you can go to System Preferences>Accessibility>Display and check "Reduce Transparency". So I think it shows that designers at Apple are aware that your usual run-of-the-mill Helvetica is a poor choice and went to great lengths to fix large issues with it.Įdit: Found the names. I cannot link you any source on this (still searching for an appropriate article in the depths of ) but Apple discourages people 1) from hardcoding those fonts’ names in apps, 2) from using "Helvetica Neue", and instead asks devs to use generic keyword.Ī quick proof here, screenshot of system UI and normal Helvetica Neue on top of it (Photoshop mockup): It’s not your usual Helvetica Neue (which is not even Helvetica), it’s a custom version created just for system UI. Not close enough but definitely an improvement.Īs for custom kerning… that’s exactly what Apple did.

Print is 300 dpi, right? Well, Retina displays for both MacBook Pro and upcoming iMac have 218 dpi. You said that Helvetica is only good when it’s either used in print or done with custom kerning. OK, I think I addressed that but let me rephrase.
